Or just get

down on my

knees and let my eyes say it all.

Well, I had reached a decision. What exactly I was going to do about

it, I didn't know -- at least not yet.

It's now exactly one year since the first time I had started talking

with

her-- an anniversary of sorts. I remembered, because that

first time was

New Year.

And tomorrow it's New Year again.

And we had become close friends.

And I had fallen in love.

And since I am a simple-minded sort of guy, I have decided I want to

marry her.

But How to tell her, though, was a bit of a problem.

There were so many ways to do it and choosing the right one wasn't

easy. And I had no idea how she'd react.

Would she think I was moving too fast?

Was it too early to suggest marriage?

Was she even interested in me in that way?

Surely, the best way to find out was to tell her how I felt, and ask

her

if

she felt the same.

And if she did, then we could get married. Right?

These thoughts had been in my head from the moment I had

woken up that

morning. And I'd only been awake a few minutes. As I finished

brushing

my teeth,

the

phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Hi!" It was her.

The sound of her cheery voice took my breath away. "Hi!" I replied,

almost whispering.

"Listen," she said, sounding very excited. "I'm having a

party at home

tonight. Be there at eight."

"Sure," I replied.

"Ok, bye!" And she put the phone down.

I stood there for almost a minute, staring at the phone in my hand.

And then I stupidly said "Bye" to it.

I would have to reach the party early, to tell her in private. Or

should I say it right there in front of all the guests? Or after the

party, when we were cleaning up after everyone was gone?

And what was I going to get her? Should I get her anything at

all? How

about flowers? Roses? Or was that too clichéd?

Orchids sounded better.

Or bluebells.

Or tulips.

Or cauliflower.

I checked my thoughts. No. Not cauliflower.

It's New Year.

A gift was definitely in order.

I could get her that moonstone pendant she liked so much.

But then it was a little flimsy as a gift.

It was really a toy more than a piece of jewellery.

But did it matter if she really liked it?

Should I get her a book instead?

Or a CD?

Or an earring?

Or should I make her something?

I thought about my artistic skills and decided that that was probably

not

a

good idea.

I spent so much time looking for a suitable gift all day that by the

time

I

decided that flowers would be a better option, all the florists had

closed.

And it was also too late to try to get to her house early and

catch her

alone.

So I decided I'd tell her after the party when everyone was gone. And

that I wouldn't get her anything -- more because I couldn't, than

anything

else.

Feeling like a fool, and extremely nervous, I reached her doorstep. I

was on time, but there didn't seem to be any noise coming

from inside.

Maybe no one had turned up yet. After all, who came to a

party on time?

I stood there and composed myself for a minute.

Then, reasonably confident that the turmoil I was going through

wouldn't show, I knocked.

She opened the door, but only a fraction.

She slid out without opening the door completely, handed me a

piece of

cloth, and told me to tie it around my eyes. "We're playing

Blind Man's

Buff," she said.

Meekly, I put the blindfold on, and she led me into the house. There

was silence, and no one was making a sound. Quite sneaky of

everyone, I

thought to myself.

She spun me around a little, and then made me stop.

She backed away, and then said from somewhere behind me, "Ok, you can

take it off now."

Though a little confused as to what version of Blind Man's Buff was

played after taking the blindfold off, I complied.

And as soon as I opened my eyes, I froze.

I was standing in the middle of her empty living room, and the lights

had all been turned off. But the room was brightly lit with dozens of

candles.

And on the wall in front of me, was a big poster with the following

words on it:

One year ago, this day we met.

There was an arrow pointing to the right, beside the poster.

So I turned. On the next wall were the words:

One year of friendship

One year of joy

One year of laughter

between a girl and a boy

One year of comfort

One year of closeness

One year of peace

and a whole lot of happiness

On the third wall, was:

One year or Six,

a lifetime it seems,

And yet, it feels just like yesterday

I turned to look at the fourth wall, and there, standing in front of

it, was she, holding up a poster in her hands that said:

I want to be this happy forever

Will You Marry Me?

Reducing carbon footprints....

Well I dint give a shit to all those people who were crying wolf over Global warming some months back and asking India n China to take strict measures to cut back GHG emissions.

But after interacting a lot of people, I realised dat I was wrong. Not only we are sticking to age old technologies in the name of capital saving but our personal conduct in general has also been far from the desired level in this reference.

In industrial sector, we have given a lot of relaxation in environmental norms( even if we have framed norms den execution part has not been upto the mark) . The proof is shifting of many mfg set ups from Europe n US( where such norms are very stringent ) to India . Agreed dat labour cost is less in our countries but environmental norms given a lot of incentives to many cos.

Many of our own cos are still using age olg technologies which make more noises, use more fuel n emit more of smokes etc. n these people have been let off coz of vsarious loopholes in our system. One living proof is the amount of lubricants we use compared to other countries.

Coming to individuals, I think we can contribute a lot in dis direction. Other day I was attending rain dance. A lot of arrangements were made. It was gud to see so many people enjoying the music n artificial rain but the annoying thing was dat at dat time natual rain was also taking place n it was such a waste of water.

We can reduce wastege of papers by working on soft copies n I m fed up wid d people who always ask for the hard copies. I mean its more convenient to use soft copies but m finding very difficult to convince people to minimise printing.

I ve seen a lot of people driving n it will have a big inpact if de adopt simple things. Excessive use of clitches, accelerating n useless braking can be avoided. Maintaining tyre pressures and proper maintenance of engines will not only reduce pollution but also increase the m/c's life.

Again improper use of AC is rampant.People will smoke in air conditioned spaces n open a small vent or put on exhaust fans to pre empt the objections of other people. Another inefficiency.

Govt can improve public transport so dat usage of personal vehicals can be reduced.

I dunt say dat we shd go bak to stone age or even medieval age to reduce out carbon footprints but we shd adopt better( more efficient) technologies and use dem judiciously.

Name is the Game....

At the outset only I want to make clear that I consider myself very fortunate dat beside Vaibhav, I ve got a lot of names..few in fact I cant even mention here. But must say that people have been neglecting one more grp of people who dunt do nething except doing frauds.......politicians can change their stance if they are caught but the grp I m talking abt have to work so smartlt that de cant be caught coz if they are caught then de will not be given another chance.....

I m talking abt engineers....Right from the start of the course, engineers are taught newer ways to cook up d data. be it finding frequency of sodium light using newton's ring , finding UTS of mild steel or effectiveness of heat exchanger, u vl hae to cook up d data to get to the result....It happens also in design where various maniplations were donme to reach the design parameters. Means were adopted to pass the exams coz if u ask a person afetr the exam what did u write for dis question, he wd b blank completely......

This tendency has so much entered their dna dat dose who try not to cook u d data wd be labeled fit for pure sciences and unfit for engg.

No wonder, dese people are expected to act smart and do data manipulations afetr collages as well and they keep up those expectations......

Right now cooking up data in such a way dat nobody can catch it.......Well cant help it but I belong to dis esteemed community and have to resort to finding newer methods to cook up data.

Psychometric tests

I have appeared in a no. of psychometric tests....Recently, i was in a team building session where I took another test to judge my role in a team....After the test was taken and all the implications were discussed, I went to the faculty who is a renowned HR person all over India. I asked him if this test can really give a gud idea of what I am.......Der were many options I dint feel like ticking but I had to as it was d requirement of d test......

I dint get a satisfactory answer from him on this.......Putting this question to all of u...... Girl is from a very simple family and belongs to the BIMARU belt. Boy is not as competent as the girl is but still marriage is fixed coz dr is no demand from d groom's side. On d day of marriage groom feels dat he shd be given a motorcycle n many other things. He stops talking to others n starts showing other tantrums. After sometime his sister and other family members also start throwing tantrums saying that de have not been properly taken care of. They stop taking food and do all dat kind of tamasha. Finally bride's father bows down, apologises just coz he s a bride's father . He gives d groom money n humbly request groom's family members to forget everything. Marriage is solemnised after all dis drama n bride goes to her new home n I cant imagine what all things are in store for her in dat home.

(2) Here is the story of another girl whose dad is a civil servant . Gal is a gudlooking , very fluent in english. But if u ask the competency level she has none except that she has managed to complete engg. degree . There is a HR policy of many cos. to maintain healthy sex ratio in der workforce and dis gal gets a job in a big MNC coz of lack of candidates. Package, very high package.

Now if U r a boy den even a degree of IIT cant land u up in dis job but if u r gal ( beautiful and....) den u r welcome......

These r true stories and tell us d state of girls in our country. Well how do you correlate this with creamy layer funda???

Some very difficult questions

These are very easy questions but very difficult to answer and explain. It was a moment of pride wen he said dat they in Germany are very appreciative of d fact dat indians are making a car which is costing just 1800 euros compared to the 8000-9000 euros which der cheapest cars cost. What r dose enablers which made this possible. Cheap labour, material was dd answer my fellow indians gave.

But dis german had done his homework. He pointed out dat in Germany each and every car had 2 air bags for safety which seemingly is not d case wid Nano.Again Germans have ESP( Catalytic converter wd b d right word in dis case) in der cars which may not b d reason in Nano.

Well I told him dat Nano is complying wid Emission norms of India but as far as safety is concerned , I agreed dat norms are not as stringent as Europe and dis factor did play a very big role in bringing down d cost.

One of d person pointed out dat dese days cars of each n every brand are being manufactured in India but I knew d next question coming. How many of dem are of indian designs or indian cos.?? Well to out it shortly it was an embarassing situation.

I did point out dat India is coming up very fast and all dat hulla abt India Shining is due to increasing middle class. Though der r positive signs but still der r mnay sections of society who have not been touched wid this growth. Perhaps we can judge how much well distributed our growth has been if we can answer to d question german pointed out.

He observed so many 2 wheelers cycles, tutus( autos) on indian roads ( he was appreciative of some gud roads in India) . Nano is so much cheap but will these cycles , scooters motorcycles will be replaced by Nano in near future??? And if yes den to wat extent?? I think dat will take a long time and points us out the long way we wil have to go........

Again I was at pain to glorify Made in India brand which is again an aera we will have to work on.

Flat pitches.....

Read the score line.....450 -1. Every batsman irrespective of his class can hit a bowler without caring whether he s Warne, Mcgrath, murli, Mtini, Lee etc. This has made the game less exciting however no. of sixes and fours have increased and so has the total scores which I think helps in generating more revenue.

But, in the end d game will suffer more as the game looks more interesting if Batsman and bowlers both have equal chances and bowlers are dominating. Ask ne batsman and he wil rate his innings not on the basis of the score he has made but the trying conditions in which he made ne score.

Who wd like to be McGrath or Bret Lee if this situ prevails and batsmen keep on dominating the scene.

Some more IITs and IIMs

Government announced recently that its going to open 10 more IITs and IIMs and the apparent reason is that it wants to promote higher techinical education in country but wont opening more IITs and IIMs dilute the brand of these institutions? Already these instis are facing crunch of gud faculty members and it ie yet to be seen how the govt will manage to attract more faculty members for newer instis.

Again with increasing govt interference which started from Murli Manohar Joshi's reign as HRD minister and continuing with Arjun SIngh's reservation pol;icy , tthere is already a lot of load on infrastructure of these instis and they are losing their sheen.

I think that more than higher education govt should rather concentrate on Primary Education and ty to reduce the drop outs. Though efforts have been made in this direction but more focus is required. It requires a lot of money to open ne IIT or IIM and if we look at the distribution of IITs into states , we will find dat decisions were taken to pacify different regional parties and states.

There was also some talk about giving reservation to fairer sex in IITs and seeing the ratio of ladies in these instis I think this can be done but again there will be many repercussions of this.Recently IITs have changed the pattern of JEE and there is a cap on the no. of years a person can drop to appear for JEE and this should help people from every section( ladies included) . But I do think that so many times parents dont pay attention towards the education of girls's education.

Lets see if this decision of govt would materialise or not coz govt's budget is already under a lot of stress due to Sixth Pay Commision.
